Touring NOW George the Poet
In the day of the Beat Generation spoken word poetry was a powerful tool in the communication of social issues, and the general feeling of the youth. The medium stayed alive at slam poetry nights throughout the worldwide, but of late, spoken word has begun to make an ever bigger comeback.
Among the artists making their voices heard is 24 year old Londoner George Mpanga, better known by the stage name George the Poet. Having studied Politics, Psychology and Sociology at Cambridge the artist left rap behind to focus on spoken word saying,
and thoughtful commentary is exactly what he provides. His voice is soft but powerful, and he speaks with a sense of wisdom far beyond his years, putting him at the forefront of a modern movement of spoken word poetry. His EP ‘The Chicken and the Egg’ chronicles rocky relationships and becoming a parent too early, and his previous works have addressed social issues. The artist also places an importance on youth and previously funded a project called ‘The Jubilee Line’ a series of poetry workshops for underprivileged secondary school students in London. George also recently released his first book, a collection of his poems called ‘Search Party’
