London Collection’s Men showcased an array of wonders throughout the catwalk shows and designer presentations. However the most surprising and by far most welcomed was the announcement Nicholas Kirkwoods’ foray into mens footwear.
Coming from prestigious design schools, Central St. Martins and Cordwainers College, Kirkwood launched his eponymous women’s collection in 2005 before extending his label into mens this year. Throughout his 8 years, Kirkwood has won a heap of critical acclaim, including the prestigious Accessories Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2012.
Continuing with the fine craftsmanship that makes up his women’s collections, Kirkwood further uses geometric forms, as well as attention to line, proportion and intricate detailing. The results, are wonderful. Signature, key and statement pieces that exude luxuriousness, as well the fine handcrafted work and rich materials.
Our favourite pieces come in the metallic two-tone lace-ups in silver and bronze, along with the black and navy oxford. Injections of fun come with an orange and burgundy zig-zag pattern featured on a slip on loafer and as detail to a brogue. All of Kirkwood’s designs are 100% handcrafted in Italy, using the finest materials available.
With the men’s footwear market becoming bigger, stronger and inevitably a lot more popular every day, it’s great to see that such a celebrated women’s shoe designer has branched out into the men’s market, without changing his unique design aesthetics. It’s just a complete shame that we have to wait until July before we can pop these beauties on!
